Benefits

Learn more about the benefits of cold saltwater therapy.

Initial response to injury

When a horse sustains an injury, the injured tissue releases chemicals which cause white blood cells to accumulate at that sight.  The body always responds to an injury with a predictable inflammatory response as the first step towards healing. Heat, swelling and pain are associated with this first stage of injury causing increased blood flow.  â€‹â€‹

A healthy body recognizes an injury and sends an abundance of white blood cells to the area to start working on repairs.  Swelling and inflammation are often accompanied by heat and if excessive, can cause tissue breakdown and increase further damage.

Fast recovery time

Ice/Cold is what is known as a vasoconstrictor, meaning it constricts blood vessels and decreases circulation. The use of cold gives the injured site a faster recovery time.  Pain and muscle spasm are decreased directly by the effect of cold on pain receptors and nerve conduction (thus providing an anesthetic effect) and in turn promotes healing.

Pain relief

Dead Sea Salt has 10 times more minerals than normal sea salt. The Dead Sea is known for its therapeutic and pain relieving properties; people have traveled to its shores for centuries to soak in the salty, healing waters. While most sea salt contains 85% sodium chloride, Dead Sea Salt has a much lower content at 30.5%. Dead Sea Salt contains 21 minerals including magnesium, calcium, sulfur, bromide, sodium, zinc, and potassium and is said to improve healing and blood circulation.

Magnesium: Promotes quick healing of tissue and is essential for cell metabolism.

Bromide: Relaxes body muscles and calms nerves.

Sulfur: Known as a powerful detoxifying agent and a natural disinfectant.

Potassium: Decreases pain by blocking pain receptors, and restores healthy circulation.

Sodium: Relieves stiffness and is also a powerful detoxifying agent.

Reduce inflammation

Epsom Salt isn't really salt but is a compound made up of high levels of Magnesium Sulfate. Magnesium Sulfate helps to relieve muscle aches and pains and is readily absorbed through the skin. The Magnesium component in both Epsom and Dead Sea Salts helps the body reduce inflammation as well as assist in flushing toxins from the body. Both Epsom and Dead Sea Salts have excellent healing capabilities and are highly effective anti-inflammatory agents, however, by combining them they provide a mineral rich soak that will not only promote quicker healing and shorten recovery times, but can also aid in preventing injuries.
